BAAK Safety Shoe Review
Why this shoe stands out for us — and how we use it
BAAK has been doing something the rest of the safety shoe industry mostly ignores for over 30 years: taking foot health seriously. Not as a marketing point. As an engineering principle.
The patented Go&Relax system — validated by the Institute for Biomechanics and Orthopaedics at Cologne Sports University — changes how the toe cap behaves. Most safety shoes use a rigid cap that blocks the natural bending of the foot at the ball. BAAK's flex cap, flex zone and H-coupling element work together to allow the foot to roll naturally through each step, even with full protection in place.
Shape — taper line, volume and heel fit
Here's where we need to be honest with MFF's audience: the BAAK toe box is narrower than you might expect from a brand that leads on foot health. It is not a wide toe box shoe in the way that the Gaucho Ninja or the Wyde range are wide. It follows a more conventional safety shoe shape.

The flex cap changes how the cap behaves — it doesn't change how wide the shoe is. If you have wider feet, check the specific model's width options carefully before ordering. BAAK does offer multiple widths across their range, but the standard fit runs more conventional.
Volume is good throughout — well padded, with a multi-layer lining that feels considered rather than cost-cut. The heel is secure and well-structured, with the H-coupling element in the outsole supporting correct heel position. Narrow feet will actually find the BAAK a good fit — the more conventional shape works in their favour here.
Function — fit for purpose
As a safety shoe, the BAAK is excellent. Fully EN ISO 20345 certified — no asterisks, no pending status. The EVA cushioning borrowed from running shoe technology is genuinely noticeable underfoot, particularly on hard floors over long periods. The Go&Relax system reduces the energy cost of each step in a way that becomes apparent over a full working day rather than immediately.
The slip resistance, ESD certification options, and range of protection classes make BAAK a serious option for environments that require specific compliance. This is a shoe built for people who need proper protection and want to not destroy their feet in the process.
Who we believe this shoe is for
BAAK is for the serious workplace wearer who needs full, certified protection and isn't willing to compromise on foot health to get it. Specifically:
- Workers in industries requiring EN ISO 20345 certified footwear with no exceptions
- Those managing knee, ankle or back issues who need a safety shoe that doesn't make things worse
- Narrow to medium width feet — the conventional fit works well for this profile
- Workers doing high daily mileage on hard floors who need genuine cushioning
If you have wide feet and toe box space is a priority, look at the Gaucho Ninja Sneaky Ninjas. If full certification and engineering pedigree matter most, BAAK is the answer.
Our verdict
A lot of effort has gone into this shoe, but some areas we believe need to be reconsidered, the toe box is just too rounded for us, this would not be a shoe we would wear on a day-day basis if we required the steel toe box. We would opt for a boot that offers a better shape. With that being said, they are absolutely better than the conventional shoes available.
If you have narrow or medium width feet, these shoes will be quite ok for you, sizing up will also provide additional room.
Would we buy again? Yes — for the right foot type and the right workplace.
Who for? Narrow to medium feet, certified protection essential, high daily mileage.
Who not for? Wide feet expecting a barefoot-width toe box.
